Who needs a laundromat when you have a lake?

Lake Haviland, about 20 miles North of Durango was my second overnighter and proved to be a brilliant little spot for some swimming.

Swimming across the lake proved a good ice-breaker with the assorted grandmom and pops kicking their heels on the other side. My accent seemed to cause a few problems though given I was asked if I was from Denmark....

Plenty of SQUIRRELS! were in evidence, along with Heron and jumping trout to keep them interested

My body clock was still slightly wierded out so I was awake early and sat out on a little wooden fishing jetty to watch the sunrise break over the mountains. As you can see from the photos, the lake nestles between ridges, which meant that whilst the sun was up, it had to climb above the mountains to shine directly on the lake. The Western ridge was outlined in warm golden glow first and then over about an hour, the painted light gradually descends towards the lake. Beautiful. My only company was a bear grumbling somewhere in the distance and a gang of small ospreys fishing for breakfast.

  1. This kind of reminds me of the Old Spice youtube video's. "I'm on a horse", "I'm on a boat", "I'm in a lake". Random swimming opportunity but looks like a hell of a lot of fun.
