The original True Grit
featuring old bandy legs himself was filmed in these here parts, so eating lunch at the bar of the honorific True Grit cafe in Ridgway surrounded by images of Mr Wayne seemed too good to miss.
Seated at the bar between two Billy Bobs was entertaining, as was the friendly barmaid/waitress/proprietor who had all the gen on who owned which ranch in the neighbourhood.
Service was fast and food good value. Burgers were handbuilt daily apparently and were suitably homemade in appearace. Good char and flavour. The bun was the first I'd come across that actually had some real toasting about it, unfortunately it was too thick on top which made things quite heavy going. All the other elements present and adequate. Another first was finding 'proper' white onion as opposed to the now ubiquitous red onion as a garnish. I actually prefered this set up as it gave a nice kick / crunch to the salad and complimented/contrasted with the beef well.
Much like the Boss Hog the day before, so much John Wayne memorabilia could have provided a lot of sizzle to go with my (burger) sausage. Having said that, the straight up first name terms of the place wouldn't have been in keeping with the faux theme style trappings of more commercial joints. Overall summary - ticked the boxes but could have been more. And so we score; remember, 0 is for not present, 1 is merely functional, 2 is adequate, 3 is good, 4 is really good and 5 is OMG-can't-talk-eating.
